Description
Perlite is mainly used in mushroom cultivation to maintain high and constant humidity, which is essential for fruiting. It is especially common in home cultivation and small production systems due to its effectiveness and low risk of contamination.
Uses of perlite in mushroom cultivation:
- Moisture retention and release:
Perlite, being porous, can absorb water and release it slowly in the form of vapor, which helps maintain high relative humidity within the growing environment. This is essential for the formation of fruiting bodies (mushrooms). - Base for fruiting chambers:
In home systems (such as the PF Tek method), a layer of moistened perlite is placed at the bottom of the container or terrarium where the mushrooms are grown. This layer maintains the ambient humidity without the need for constant watering. - Inert and resistant to contamination:
Perlite does not decompose or provide nutrients, so it does not promote the growth of contaminating bacteria or fungi, making the environment safer for the mycelium. - Improved substrate structure (in some cases):
Although not its most common use, it is sometimes mixed with other materials (such as peat or coconut fiber) to improve the aeration and moisture retention of the substrate or casing.
