Description

Vermiculite is used in mushroom cultivation to retain moisture, improve aeration, and stabilize the substrate environment, thereby promoting mycelium growth and mushroom production. It is very common in both home and professional methods due to its effectiveness and ease of use.

Uses of vermiculite in mushroom cultivation:

  1. Moisture retention:
Vermiculite can absorb and retain large amounts of water, which helps maintain a moist and constant environment, essential for mycelium growth and mushroom fruiting.

  2. Improves aeration:
Its porous structure allows good air circulation in the substrate or casing (surface covering), which prevents compaction and promotes healthy mycelium growth.

  3. Microclimate control:
It helps maintain adequate relative humidity in the growing environment, especially in closed systems or jars, such as those used in the cultivation of Psilocybe cubensis or in home kits.

  4. Casing component:
In many techniques, vermiculite is mixed with peat, coconut, or lime to form a top layer over the already colonized substrate. This layer stimulates fruiting and protects the mycelium.

  5. Thermal insulation:
Although not its main function, its ability to thermally insulate can also help maintain stable temperatures within the substrate.
